Intuitive Paintings

The paintings in this gallery are created using various types of acrylic paints. They were painted intuitively with no thoughts of what the end result would be when they were initially begun. It is not unusual for the paintings to have as many as 10 or more layers of paint. As the layers go on, the magic happens, and images may begin to appear, or the piece becomes so beautiful in it's abstraction that I decide to leave it that way.

“Patina” has a story all its own. There is actually another painting underneath this one, but it didn’t make it. So I began a new painting over the first, as it had wonderful texture and fine metallic copper that would add depth. The sculptor in me began to notice as I painted, it was looking a little like a patina on a sculpture that was turning. I rubbed back some of the new paint to let just a little of those lines and copper show through.

“Rain” is by far the lightest of any of my paintings to date. The color mix just seemed so beautiful I decided to stop here. Like many of my paintings, the photographs just don’t do the transparent layers justice.

“The Tree” is an amazing piece. I was working on a very non-objective piece, you can even follow the progress on my instagram account at cydrust. As I got towards the end, I stepped back and realized my marks had left this tree. It’s placing was perfect. It appears almost backlit by the oranges around it. Of course I had to leave it. It was pure intuitive magic, and now I just can’t imagine this painting without that tree. This painting will be featured in the January Xanadu Gallery Catalogue and purchase of it is exclusive to Xanadu.

“Sunset’s Embrace” was inspired by a truly stunning sunset. I attempted to replicate the glowing colorations from that sunset into this piece. The cloud formations partnering as if in a dance, which I interpreted with both linear (male) and organic (female) marks to create “Sunset’s Embrace”.
